Here are some additional
links for getting to know us more...
But first, an intro...
Communion is now
five years old! We have been blessed by three specific groups
of people:
First, the members of our "launch team" who helped
to frame the ministry priorities of our church from the beginning.
Secondly,
all the individuals and families who have become a part of our
fellowship since our beginning. And finally, our "extended" family
of ministry leaders whom we respect and who have given us great encouragement
and endorsements.
But a lot happens in five years,
and today, we are in a "re-building campaign." The
reason for this is that the majority of our founding families have
since
moved from California. We are now in the process of "replacing"
these former members and also in the process of training new elders
for our church.
So we are very committed to "reaching
out" to those who are seeking to align themselves with a unique
church that has as her main priorities the "3 marks" of a
Christian church:
- The proper proclamation
of the the Scripture! This means that we read the
words of the Bible, sing the words of the Bible, pray
the words of the Bible, recite creeds based upon the words of the
Bible, and preach through the very texts of the Bible.
- The proper administration
of the Sacraments! This means that we are so focused
on proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in our worship service, that
we will always observe
the Lord's Supper or Baptism every Sunday. These sacraments portray
the life transforming reality of the Gospel of Christ as Savior
and Lord of his church. This commitment is expressed in a service
of "covenant renewal." (please see our past worship folders
for an example of this at our Worship
Service tab)
- The commitment for
total discipleship! This means that
our leadership is committed to training Christians (and Christian
households) toward maturity and service. Scripture
teaches that those who recognize the cost of following Jesus are
more effective and fulfilled in their walk with Christ. We are
devoted to ensuring that those who value the Kingdom of Christ
above all will have ample opportunities to grow in the faith.
We are in prayer everyday for God
to raise up individuals and families to join such a church as ours!
That together, based upon our spiritual gifts and commitments,
we will be faithful in establishing a kingdom work that will truly
reflect the communion of the saints.
We ask for your prayers and we hope
that you will join us soon. Peace!
( ...this entry first served as our "four" year welcome, and still stands for year # 5. Recently, one of our founding elders moved to North Carolina for a wonderful job promotion -- so a valuable leadership role is presently missing. We are in the process of raising up more elders and servants to carry on the call of Christ for his church! We pray that many will also respond to this call and participate with us!)

"Kent Moorlach
has been a friend for many years and I've been impressed
with his commitment to the ministry of Word and sacrament,
as well as to the personal lives of his parishioners. If
you're in the neighborhood, Communion Presbyterian is a great
place to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ."

Our First "Welcome" message follows...
On behalf of the
members of Communion Presbyterian, let me say, "Welcome."
My name is Kent Moorlach, and I am
the pastor of this "mission
work." I have a great story to share with you about our existence,
but I'll keep it as brief as possible:
As I was finishing up my
Bachelors degree at CSUF, I performed the classic "life evaluation" drill.
Did I really want a career in journalism, or did I want something
that REALLY cared about truth?
"What is truth?" It's the
most profound question of all time! It was now my turn to answer
that question. In my childhood, I'd been raised in the church
and was told that the Bible stories were true. Yet in my college
philosophy classes, I was taught to question everything (except
the professors' opinions).
While concluding my
college studies, and serving as a part-time youth
worker,
I concluded that eternity, God's
Word,
and
the souls of people were the most important "truths" of
the universe (and still do to this day).
So I enrolled at Talbot Seminary
in La Mirada, Ca. While there, I underwent a theological reformation.
Please understand, I respect
and admire Talbot immensely, perhaps more today than ever -- but
what I read in the Bible, and what I was taught back then, made
for too many classroom debates. I was a classic 5 Point Calvinist
among a number of pointless professors (admit it, that's a good one!)
At this time, in the early 90's, I began working as the High School
Minister at Covenant Presbyterian (Indep.) in Orange, Ca. My years
at Covenant were enriched by the teaching of many fine pastors and
teachers who were on staff there (it's an impressive list). It was
during my years at Covenant that I began to desire more than just
youth ministry because clearly, the faith of the entire family is
so foundational to developing disciples of Christ's Kingdom.
I continued my Mdiv program at San
Francisco Theological Seminary (PCUSA) in Southern California (at
that time on the Claremont
Campuses).
Once again, please understand, I have great respect and admiration
for some faithful instructors at SFTS -- but while there, I witnessed
firsthand, the struggles taking place in the PCUSA regarding "truth." In
God's providence, it was actually this seminary that encouraged me
to seek out a conservative, Reformed, and Presbyterian denomination.
Through
a simple Internet search, the Lord led me to the Associate Reformed
Presbyterian Church (ARPC), and I sought to affiliate.
It was at this time that I became
a convert to Church Planting. The ARPC ordained me, and Covenant
commissioned me,
and here
we are today in Irvine: a "mission developer" with a new
congregation seeking to minister in Christ's name.
We're excited to see how God is moving
this story forward. We already have many new visitors and friends
from
the area of our "new home" joining us. Hopefully,
you can join us too!
If you are in the place right now to visit, then we pray this will
happen soon! If
not,
then please
lift
a prayer
for us right now, that we will remain faithful to God's truth, so
that in the end we will say together, "Blessed
are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb...These
are the
true
words of God." (Revelation 19)
Our second "Welcome" message...
Communion Church
is now two years old! But go back with us to the beginning -- when
we were a group of people with a heart for starting a new church
in a strategic and growing part of Orange County. We had the freedom
to develop any "model" for ministry that we wanted! We
had the option of simply imitating that which was popular, or we
could have done something very unpredictable... What did we decide?
Well, we sort of transcend all the
categories -- or better yet, we are a communion of all of them!
But our guiding conviction has always been this: We want to learn
and obey what the Scriptures teach about worship, discipleship,
and evangelism and then we want to live this out in every arena
of life.
As a result, we love to sing, pray,
read, recite, and preach the Scripture in a way that all the family
can be involved. Because of this, some think we are liturgical,
others think we are like a youth group, and still others think
we are pioneering one trend or another! Whatever the case, these
convictions remain: God is worthy of our praise and our total devotion!
His word teaches us what honors Him! We want to impress these convictions
upon our own hearts and with all whom we live and come into contact.
We know that if you join us at one
of our gatherings, you will find a very intergenerational church
that loves the Lord and each other, and that we are welcoming to
all who visit (because we are excited to share with others what
we have been up to these past two years!)
So please continue to search our
site and also make plans to visit us in person soon!
God Bless,
RevK
